Churchill Downs

Description

There’s been horse racing in Louisville since the 1780s, when events took place on Main Street. Although the first Kentucky Derby wasn’t held till 1875, “the most exciting two minutes in sports”—on the first Saturday in May—is the nation’s oldest continuously held sporting event. Its home, Churchill Downs, is as steeped in tradition as the Derby itself.

The 1.25-mile course near downtown also hosts the Kentucky Oaks on the Friday before the Derby and more than 30 other Thoroughbred stakes races throughout its spring and fall seasons. A walking tour of the track is included with admission to the on-site Kentucky Derby Museum, which offers several other, more in-depth tours.
