Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park

At Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park, you can glimpse preserved examples of Native American religious drawings dating back to the 1600s. The walls of the rock shelter display pictographs of religious significance to the Chumash people. Painted Cave State Historic Park offers a rare chance to see artifacts of Chumash civilization in their original, remote setting rather than in a museum. The park is three miles south of the San Marcos Pass. Turn east off Hwy 154 onto Painted Caves Road. The cave is located on the left, about two miles up a steep, narrow road. The parking area is limited to one or two cars at a time, and cannot accommodate trailers and RVs.
