Cape Hatteras Lighthouse: A National Treasure

Description

The 198-foot Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark, is the nation’s tallest brick light. The famed lighthouse is the one of two Byway lighthouses regularly open for climbing. The structure is the central feature of a light station with a Keepers Quarters and a Double Keepers Quarters. Moving the lighthouse due to shoreline erosion was a 1999 engineering marvel. The lighthouse district is a dominant cultural site for Hatteras Island residents. Visitor Center open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during summer months and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily September through May (closed Christmas). The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is generally open for climbing from the third Friday in April through Columbus Day (early October). The Cape Point Campground is generally open Memorial Day through Labor Day.
