Cannery Row

The buildings once housing the sardine canneries that lent their name to both a district and a John Steinbeck novel today house restaurants, shops, nightspots, and hotels---not to mention an acclaimed aquarium. There’s plenty to see and do in Cannery Row itself as well as nearby. You can relax on McAbee and San Carlos beaches, stroll along the Coastal Recreation Trail, and spend time exploring more of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Also noteworthy are the City of Monterey tours of Cannery Row's Pacific Biological Laboratories, once owned and operated by Edward Flanders Rob Ricketts, the marine biologist who was a close friend of Steinbeck.
