Calcasieu Ship Channel/Cameron Ferry
Crossing the Calcasieu Ship Channel via the Cameron Ferry, you will see commercial and recreational watercrafts (often hugely disproportionate in size!) moving side by side. This channel allows ships to travel 34 miles inland to access the Port of Lake Charles, the 12th largest seaport in the United States. More than 1000 ocean-going ships per year travel up the ship channel. From massive international tankers transporting Liquefied Natural Gas, to “small” 65 foot vessels carrying supplies and personnel to offshore oil rigs, to jack-up oil rigs being towed into port for repair or out to the Gulf of Mexico to be put into production, the main commercial industries of the area (oil & gas and commercial fishing) are plentifully evident as you ride across the channel with flocks of pelicans leading the way.
