Bridges of Madison County

It didn't take the star power of Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood to make local folks appreciate the treasures in their backyard. They've been celebrating their 19th-century covered wooden bridges every year since 1970 during the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, always held the second full weekend in October. The festival features guided bus tours of the covered bridges, food, craft demonstrations, music, entertainment, and a classic car show. Five of the county's original 19 covered bridges survive; maps to the bridges, as well as other locations depicted in the movie, can be obtained year-round from the Madison County Chamber of Commerce or from various merchants on the town square. The Madison County Chamber of Commerce is located at 73 Jefferson Street (the northeast corner of the square) in Winterset. May 1 through October 31, hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday Noon to 4 PM; winter hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM to 4:30 PM.
