Bodie Island Lighthouse

Description

The 156-foot Bodie Island Light Station is one of three lighthouses located in Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The tower of Bodie Island Lighthouse is currently undergoing a major restoration project of the both the exterior and interior and of the first-order Fresnel lens. Coastal environments take a heavy toll on historic structures and the restoration project will restore this beautiful structure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to her former glory. The Bodie Island Visitor Center, located approximately six miles south of the Seashore’s northern entrance at Whalebone Junction, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round (closed Christmas). Outside the Visitor Center, a path leads to the Lighthouse and a wildlife observation deck on the edge of a freshwater pond where waterfowl and wading birds can be observed.
