Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, which is listed on the National Register of Historical Sites, comprises over 1500 feet of a subterranean coal mine that dates from the late 19th century. Visitors take a guided tour of this low seam coal mine in a special car and learn about the evolution of the region's coal-mining industry. The staff recommends that you bring a jacket or wrap because the temperature within the mine remains a constant, cool 58 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Above ground, you can visit the Superintendent's House, the Coal Company House, the gift shop, and the community church. Also on the grounds, the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia offers science and art exhibits housed in four railroad boxcars. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is open seasonally. Tours run from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. For more information, visit
