Algonquin Provincial Park

Description

Algonquin Provincial Park is Ontario's largest park. Most of its forested terrain is accessible only by canoe. You'll find a network of connected lakes spread throughout this mountainous region. Canoeing, backpacking, fishing, and hiking are the park's primary recreations. Twelve excellent, sand beaches are situated along the park's lake and riversides. No lifeguards are on duty. The most popular beaches are at Lake of the Two Rivers, where you'll also find a store. Otherwise, strike out on your own and picnic, swim, or windsurf--anything goes as long as it isn't motorized. Gasoline-powered motor boats are allowed on a few lakes. The park has 13 nature trails, some of which run along the shorelines. You'll also find an outdoor theater, logging museum, and visitors center. Dog sled and snowshoe exhibitions are presented each winter. Tent and RV camping (no hookups) sites are available. Some campsites are first-come, first-served, but most accept reservations. Reservations are required for cabins. Handicapped-accessible sites are available. Any fishing requires an Ontario fishing license, which is sold in the park. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted in park and campgrounds but not in any beach areas. Reservations, restrictions, and fees: Ontario has a central reservation phone number for all provincial park campgrounds: 888-668-7275. There is a nonrefundable fee over and above any campsite fees for each reservation made. The maximum stay is three nights. There is a nominal daily park entrance fee per vehicle.
